My problem: a 96 year-old home with a basement window having a decades-long history of leaking, a rotted jamb and supporting structure. To get access to the window, metal security grate and the adjacent decking had to be removed. This ultimately included the removal and replacement of the adjoining porch decking, stair treads and sub-structure, due to dry rot.
I consulted with three professionals and not one of them would touch this project. I’ve always preferred relying on referrals to using the internet., but I was at a loss.I scoured local online resources and found just one that seemed to be a good fit: a highly professional, no-nonsense website that revealed a wealth of experience and a healthy regard for design and taste. David Blair was the first and last professional I spoke with.
What I I learned throughout the course of the project is that David Blair has:
An in-depth knowledge of construction methods and materials used in older homes in NE Portland;
An uncanny ability to expect the unexpected which keeps him on his toes and able to develop creative work-arounds;
Expertise with the latest tools, construction methods (hidden fastening systems, etc.), joinery, materials 9 (rot resistant wood and rust proof fasteners and screws)
David did an outstanding job replacing the decking adjacent to the window, the porch and stair treads. I am thrilled with the result! Every effort was made to waterproof every surface, and not one nail or screw head is visible on the entire project.
The highlight of this project was the construction of a handsome, glass block window allowing for sparkling light in the basement room as well as providing security without the metal grate. It was an adventure watching this project take shape at the hands of a consummate professional who loves his work.

Here are a few client comments.
When a tree branch fell on my deck and destroyed the fencing, at a friend’s suggestion, I contacted David Blair at Portland Handyman Carpentry.
Dave came to view the damage the day after I contacted him. He is an excellent communicator, carefully explaining his plan so I knew what he had in mind. He began work shortly thereafter.
He worked closely with one other man repairing the damage. They worked quickly but carefully, two craftsmen turning their craft into art.
Dave constructed a bric-a-brac top for the fence so that I had more privacy and protection. It is stunning work and I can’t wait to enjoy it even more this spring and summer.
I wholeheartedly recommend Dave. He has an artist’s eye and he can turn damage into beauty.
